Alexander Payne is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He was the first person to write and direct a pair of consecutive Best Adapted Screenplays, The Descendants (2011) and Nebraska (2013).

He has also been nominated for Best Director and won two, for Election (1999), about a high school teacher who runs for class president as a joke but who is then persuaded to run after an unforeseen event seriously; and Sideways (2004), about two men on a wine tasting trip in California’s Santa Ynez Valley.

His Achievements

Payne’s most significant accomplishment to date is his acting career’s first Best Adapted Screenplay. Payne’s first film as an independent filmmaker was Citizen Ruth (1996), which won the Munich Film Festival’s Goldene Palme for the best first film. He made his first name-making movie with Election in 1999 and became more famous for directing Sideways in 2004. After making movies about small stories about ordinary people, he made the big picture and had the most successful movie of all time with The Descendants.
