Amy’s Kitchen Makes Eating Plant-based Foods Easy
The story behind Amy’s Kitchen is a true love story. Rachel and Andy Berliner were expecting their first child in 1987. She was on bed rest, which put him in charge of meals. Andy headed to the grocery store to find organic, vegetarian ready-made meals. When he could not find food to please their palettes, they decided to cook at home. In November 1987, their baby girl was born. The first Amy’s Kitchen pot pie came out of the oven a few weeks later. Rachel’s mother developed the recipe, and they started a family business. They named the company after their daughter, Amy.
The pot pies quickly became a popular food item. In 1991, the company expanded its menu. Paying close attention to detail and adding a pinch of love, the company started offering mac and cheese and burritos. The company soon added pizza to its menu, followed by beans, chili, and soups in 1999.
It is not only the taste of the food the Berliners are interested in. The Berliners care about the ingredients that make their dishes. When Berliners began to learn about GMOs, they took action. They did not want any GMOs in their food. In 2001, the company started placing the Non-GMO label on its food.
Amy’s also cares about its carbon footprint. When the company began, the word organic was a relatively new buzzword. There were only a few organic farms. The Berliners started their organic farm to produce the food for their products. Not only does organic farming result in better food, but it is also better for the land and farmers. To further its environmental efforts, the company is producing its own energy. The company has a goal of becoming completely energy efficient.
Do customers care about the company’s efforts? Some do. Some consumers purchase the food because they are organic, Non-GMO, and care about the environment. According to a survey conducted by Amy’s, people are becoming more interested in eating more plant-based foods for their health.
