Teal Communications, a telecommunications startup offering public safety communications solutions from a single location, has appointed Glenn Lurie, founder and CEO of Wireless Generation and former chairman and CEO of Clearwire Corporation to its board.

The appointment comes as the company prepares for its third round of funding to be completed later this month. Teal’s current backers include the Univision Foundations, Verizon Ventures, LLC., Intel Capital Investment Company LP [“Intel Corp”], Rakuten Ventures Inc..

Lurie is currently an independent consultant in the wireless industry with wide-ranging experience in wireless networks and technologies spanning over 25 years. In his time with Clearwire in 2007-2009 he was President & Chief Operating Officer as well as Chairman & CEO. He was also a member of the Clearwire Board of Directors since 2007.

Prior to Clearwire, Lurie was President & Chief Operating Officer of Nextel Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: NXTL) at Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S) from 2004-2007 and President & CEO of Sprint PCS from 2001-2004. From 1997-2001 he was executive vice president and general manager, Fixed Wireless Access at Sprint PCS. He served as senior vice president and chief marketing and sales officer for MCI WorldCom, now Verizon Business Group Inc.

Lurie was a co-founder and member of the Board of Directors of the Nextel Communications Inc. (“Nextel”) from its inception in 1998 through January 2001, and served on its CEO search committee, including being chairman. He was co-founder and senior member of the wireless industry advisory boards at MCI WorldCom, Sprint PCS Corporation, US West Corporation and later Sprint Corporation.

He is a director at Intel Corp., a corporate sponsor of his former company Clearwire Corporation (nasdaq: CLWR), for nearly 35 years where he currently serves on its Board of Directors.
