Gregory R. Blatt is a former CEO and Chairman of Match Group, a technology company based in the United States. Blatt has held many senior positions at the Match Group, Tinder, and IAC companies, including Chairman, CEO, and Executive Chairman. Match Group, which IAC owns, owns Tinder.

Early Life

Greg Blatt, born and raised in a Boston suburb, had no ambitions for executive leadership or even law. He went to college because “that’s what you did,” and he has conceded that his academic achievement in his earlier years was less than great. He was an English student with an economics minor at Colgate University in upstate New York. He didn’t seem career-oriented throughout college, taking the literature subjects he liked but never thinking about what he would do after graduation. In the back of his mind, the concept of going to law school, which would combine all of his passions into a more practical skill set, began to shape, and he finally took the LSAT and was accepted to Columbia Law School.

His career in law and then Tech

Gregory R. Blatt had a long career in the legal profession before he became an executive at Match Group. After spending his first 18 months out of Columbia Law School working for Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, New York’s leading mergers and acquisitions firm, he returned to corporate law in 1999 as a general counsel at Martha Stewart Living. He was responsible for overseeing the company’s legal affairs and regulatory compliance there.

Blatt left Martha Stewart Omnimedia after four and a half years to join IAC, a much larger organization with a far broader scope. Ticketmaster, Expedia, Hotels.com, Home Shopping Network, and Match.com were all part of IAC’s enormous conglomerate of enterprises, which focused on early adopters of online business models that have since become the norm. Blatt had the opportunity to work on the legal side of things while still being highly involved in executive concerns as general counsel, giving him the expertise and experience he required to become CEO of Match.com.
