Hassan Jameel Celebrates Two Decades of Impact at J-PAL Anniversary
On November 3, 2023, Hassan Jameel took center stage at MIT, marking the 20th anniversary of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL). As vice chairman of Community Jameel, Jameel’s presence underscored the longstanding partnership between the organization and J-PAL in their shared mission to combat global poverty.
In his opening remarks, Hassan Jameel reflected on the tremendous strides made over two decades. He acknowledged J-PAL’s pivotal role in evaluating anti-poverty interventions and shaping policies that have positively affected the lives of over 600 million people worldwide. Jameel emphasized the essential contributions of governments, NGOs, and affiliated professors to this success.
The origins of this partnership trace back to Jameel’s father, who, inspired by MIT economists Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee, envisioned a collaboration that would drive evidence-based change. This vision has evolved into a global network of researchers and policymakers dedicated to identifying effective solutions to poverty.
Jameel highlighted the organization’s achievements, including their significant global impact and the receipt of prestigious accolades, such as the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences awarded to Duflo and Banerjee. These accomplishments, Jameel noted, are the result of collective efforts and a commitment to data-driven strategies.
Looking ahead, Hassan Jameel expressed enthusiasm for future initiatives, such as the European Social Inclusion Initiative and policy labs in India, Egypt, and South Africa. He reiterated Community Jameel’s commitment to supporting J-PAL as they continue to address pressing global challenges.
The event at MIT not only celebrated past achievements but also set the stage for future collaboration between Community Jameel and J-PAL. With Hassan Jameel’s continued support, the partnership aims to expand its impact, fostering opportunities for millions more around the globe.
