RAINN Protects and Serves the Public With Evolving Education
In 1994, Scott Berkowitz saw a real need for an open dialogue about sexual violence. He began the RAINN organization and built it into a company that serves society on several levels. Learning about RAINN’s mission gives survivors and loved ones a way to cope and move forward from their traumas.
Starting With a Hotline
RAINN started with a nationwide hotline. It offered a toll-free number for anyone to call when they needed help. By advertising the hotline to the public, RAINN encouraged people to discuss these taboo subjects. Subsequently, more people picked up the phone to discuss their situations. Healing was possible as the conversations became commonplace.
Supporting Survivors
This organization raises money to help survivors with resources as varied as counseling, referrals and education. RAINN also works alongside lawmakers to make a real difference in the world. New laws protect children and vulnerable adults from further trauma.
The hotline is still available today. Survivors have other options with the RAINN mobile app too. Downloading the app gives survivors instant access to resources and immediate assistance.
Training at the Corporate Level
RAINN also provides training to businesses of all sizes. By discussing these topics in a safe space, employees will know how to pinpoint issues, defuse them and protect themselves. In turn, employers learn about appropriate activities in the workplace.
These individuals take this education into the real world. Because they understand personal boundaries, fewer traumatic events may be the result of this education. RAINN stresses education with all of its actions, which breeds understanding within the public.
RAINN continues with its mission as it pinpoints new challenges and rises to meet them. Its founder and supporters fight hard for education, violence prevention and survivor resources. By educating the public, RAINN can make a difference in stopping sexual violence.
