Richard Liu Grows His Online Business
Jingdong was founded in 1998 by Richard Liu. At the start, this business was conducted at a small stall distributing products made by magneto-optical. Richard Liu didn’t allow negotiations on his product, unlike other businesses around him, which allowed customers to negotiate. Richard Liu did this because his products were of high quality and reliable.
The Jingdong Company grew within a short span of time. The company was expanded into a large retail shop after its rapid growth in the first five years since it was started. Richard Liu opened 12 new stores in Shenyang, Beijing, and Shanghai. This company made a profit of approximately $9 million per year in revenue.
The electronic store chain was the start of Richard Liu’s journey into retail businesses. In 2003, the JD Company started to take a new turn and shape in business. In the same year, most businesses, including Richard Liu’s, were forced to close as China struggled to fight the epidemic that was caused by SARS. Liu Qiangdong saw this as a golden opportunity to start operating his business in a new way rather than a hindrance. He started sharing his products online on different bulletin boards. This new opportunity was a success, and Richard Liu assigned an employee to continue selling online.
In 2004, Richard Liu went ahead and launched a new version of an online business. Within a year, Richard Liu continued to operate his business both online and in-store. His online store made more compared to his in-store business, forcing him to close his store and focus on the online business. With knowledge of computer programming, Liu Qiangdong came up with his website code by himself.
Richard Liu decided to spend his time in the office every day and save the cash he used to rent a house every month. Richard Liu started working on building logistics systems nationally in 2007 to cater to and help with the astronomical rise in popularity of the JD Company.
