 Wayne von Borstel

Wayne von Borstel is an internationally recognized water and wastewater consulting engineer who has been involved in the design, operation and management of treatment plants, distribution systems and reclaimed water facilities for over 45 years. He is president of von Borstel Associates Inc., a company he founded in 1977. Wayne von Borstel was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba, he spent two years as an apprentice mechanic for Canadian Breweries Limited. In 1965, Wayne joined the City of Winnipeg Department of Public Works to work on the city’s treatment plants, sewers and underground routes, including designing a new drinking water treatment plant at St. Vital Park. Upon completing his MBA at the University of Manitoba with a major in Industrial Management in 1965, Wayne subsequently started his own engineering company consulting on water and wastewater systems.

Following graduation from university, Wayne received several significant design awards that led to more major consulting contracts in both Canada and the United States. In the early 1970s, Wayne worked on a major project in New Mexico, designing a reclaimed water system for irrigating golf courses. In 1974 Wayne took on a larger consulting assignment to design and construct a water treatment plant and distribution system for a sugar beet refinery in Idaho.

In 1976, Wayne and his company became involved with providing advice and services to the Colorado Water Development Division which was seeking to rehabilitate an abandoned coal tipple facility at downtown Pueblo into one of the largest reclaimed water systems in North America. Eventually more than $200 million in construction contracts were awarded for this project.

The company focuses on providing water and wastewater design and construction services in North America. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, von Borstel designed a large reclaimed water system in Texas for a chemical company and provided engineering services, including designing support systems, to build the largest underground pipeline in North America for a production of oil gas near Odessa.
