About BioTech Exec Leen Kawas

Leen Kawas is a PhD in biochemistry and bioengineering; she has been working in the field for over 17 years. Dr Kawas is currently a Principal Investigator at Propel Bioscience where she is developing therapeutic products to improve wound healing and chronic ulcers.

Dr Kawas’ expertise includes research, design, and development of novel therapeutics that safely approach the damaged tissues to achieve higher rates of healing. She has also led interdisciplinary teams from early discovery to product launch on a variety of programs across therapeutic modalities. Some of these therapeutics are now in advanced stages with partnered companies for clinical translation.

Prior to joining Propel Bioscience, Dr Kawas worked at a venture-backed start-up called Cuatro Pharma where she was the Vice President of Research and Development. She led a team of scientists on the development of novel therapeutics for multiple disease indications from early discovery to late stage clinical trials. Her scientific expertise has been applied to various programs in the fields of small molecule drug development, biologics and devices, OTC/generic products, and medical device development.

Dr Kawas received her PhD in Biochemistry and Bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego. She also holds a BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Yale University. Dr Kawas is currently a Principal Investigator at Propel Bioscience where she is developing therapeutic products to improve wound healing and chronic ulcers.

Leen Kawas is a graduate of Yale University, San Diego State University, and received her doctorate of philosophy at the University of California, San Diego. She has published over 20 patents and articles in her field.

Dr Leen Kawas has been recognized as one of Top 50 Women in Biotech by BioSpace in 2013, 2014 & 2015. In 2016, Dr Kawas was awarded the Women Innovators in Life Science Award from The Innovator Magazine.
