Justin Nelson Explains How JP Morgan Manages Neurodiverse Staff
Managing a team well often means managing it differently, according to Justin Nelson, a JP Morgan Private Bank executive who has become an outspoken advocate for neurodiverse hiring in financial services. Nelson serves as Managing Director and Head of the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team, overseeing more than $15 billion in client assets from JP Morgan’s Connecticut office.
Nelson says the standard corporate playbook, built around open-ended goals and casual check-ins, does not serve neurodiverse employees well. “You have to assign tasks and ensure that they understand how this fits into a larger plan or set of rules,” he explains, describing a management approach built on clarity rather than assumption.
Turning Structure Into Strength
That structure, Justin Nelson JP Morgan argues, plays directly to many neurodiverse workers’ natural precision. “These people tend to make some of the best employees because to be very exact within a specific framework,” he says, adding that managers who learn to communicate clearly within that framework often end up with some of their strongest performers.
Getting to that point starts well before day one, though. Nelson notes that communication remains the toughest hurdle for neurodiverse candidates during hiring, even when their creative and computational abilities exceed the norm. Firms that rely on conventional interviews, he suggests, often pass over people who would excel once given clear, well-defined responsibilities.
Nelson extends this thinking into philanthropy as well, working with Adelphi University’s Bridges Program and Broad Futures, an organization that connects neurodiverse candidates with employers open to adjusting their approach. Both groups aim to smooth the transition from school into the workforce, which Nelson identifies as the hardest step for most neurodiverse individuals.
His broader argument is simple: financial firms do not need major overhauls to benefit from neurodiverse talent. A more thoughtful interview process paired with structured task management, Nelson says, is often enough to unlock skills that traditional hiring methods overlook entirely.
